Finished Products and Follow Up

At the conclusion of the "Millers" DNA labs today, students were given a summary worksheet to complete over the weekend.  It corresponds to each lab we did this week.  It is due Monday.

This assignment is extremely important to consolidate what students learned in the lab this week.  I think this week spent on hands-on learning was extremely beneficial to the students for learning these concepts, and the worksheet will help them identify the most important take-aways from each activity.

*While I normally don't assign homework over the weekend, this just happened to land on a weekend.  I reminded students of how infrequently they have "homework" for this class, and to be sure that it is completed and ready to be turned in on Monday.

DNA Models

Wednesday, we learned about the 3 parts of a nucleotide and the structure of DNA.  Students used this knowledge to build DNA models of a fragment "Jack or Jill Miller's" DNA.

Today, we are using these models to build RNA strands.

New Unit: DNA

Monday, we started our new unit on DNA.  This will be Chapter 6 in the textbook, but we will also be using a module developed by HudsonAlpha in Huntsville to help the students have a deeper understanding.

Students have already been introduced to the "Miller Family" who will be our "patients" as we learn about how DNA works.

On Monday, we were introduced to each member of the Miller family and we investigated the family's health history. As an extension of this lesson, students were asked to inquire about their own family health history and we discussed the importance of them taking charge and being aware of their own health.

Next week, we will be extracting DNA from the patient's cells and building DNA molecules using K'nex construction toys.

The test for this unit is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, December 13th.

Egg Osmosis

The students have LOVED the egg osmosis experiment we have been monitoring each day.  Many have wanted to repeat the experiment at home.  It's very easy and you may already have the supplies on hand!

Here's how:

Supplies:   Eggs (uncooked), Vinegar, Water, and Corn Syrup (or other liquid)

  1. Soak regular (uncooked) eggs in vinegar for about 2 days.  (This will dissolve the shell.)
  2. You may need to gently run water over the egg to remove all of the shell.
  3. At this point, you will have a bouncy, squishy egg!  (The egg is kept intact by the cell membrane.)
----Some of the students just wanted to play with the squishy egg, so some may stop here----

  1. Soak one of the eggs in tap water for about one day.
  2. Soak the other egg in corn syrup for the same amount of time (or you could experiment with other substances).
  3. Observe the whether water has moved into or out of the eggs.
  4. Switch the eggs.
Here are our eggs after soaking in water and corn syrup for 2 days.

Here's a close-up of the corn syrup egg:

Cell Cycle

Cell Cycle
1.      Interphase – chromosomes are copied; the cell spends most of its time in this phase
2.      Mitosis
a.       Prophase - the chromosomes condense (become visible)
b.      Metaphase - chromosomes line up along center of the cell
c.       Anaphase- the centromeres split and chromosomes begin to separate
d.      Telophase - A nuclear envelope forms around each set of chromosomes
3.       Cytokinesis – division of the cytoplasm

Microscopes & Scientific Method Webquest

Choose ONE of the following true situations, and answer the questions that follow.

The Strange Case of BeriBeri
In 1887 a strange nerve disease attacked the people in the Dutch East Indies. The disease was beriberi. Symptoms of the disease included weakness and loss of appetite, victims often died of heart failure. Scientists thought the disease might be caused by bacteria. They injected chickens with bacteria from the blood of patients with beriberi. The injected chickens became sick. However, so did a group of chickens that were not injected with bacteria.
One of the scientists, Dr. Eijkman, noticed something. Before the experiment, all the chickens had eaten whole-grain rice, but during the experiment, the chickens were fed polished rice. Dr. Eijkman researched this interesting case. he found that polished rice lacked thiamine, a vitamin necessary for good health.
1. State the Problem
2. What was the hypothesis?
3. How was the hypothesis tested?
4. Should the hypothesis be supported or rejected based on the experiment?
5. What should be the new hypothesis?
How Penicillin Was Discovered
In 1928, Sir Alexander Fleming was studying Staphylococcus bacteria growing in culture dishes. He noticed that a mold called Penicillium was also growing in some of the dishes. A clear area existed around the mold because all the bacteria that had grown in this area had died. In the culture dishes without the mold, no clear areas were present.
Fleming hypothesized that the mold must be producing a chemical that killed the bacteria. He decided to isolate this substance and test it to see if it would kill bacteria. Fleming transferred the mold to a nutrient broth solution. This solution contained all the materials the mold needed to grow. After the mold grew, he removed it from the nutruient broth. Fleming then added the nutrient broth in which the mold had grown to a culture of bacteria. He observed that the bacteria died.
1. Identify the problem.
2. What was Fleming's hypothesis?
3. How was the hypothesis tested?
4. Should the hypothesis be supported or rejected based on the experiment?
5. This experiment lead to the development of what major medical advancement?

2nd Week Update

  • Beginning today, students should be using their composition notebooks in class everyday.
  • Our 1st test of the year is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, September 6th and will cover Lab Safety and Lab Equipment.

Notebook Quizzes  Fridays

The  quiz covers that week’s Buck Bytes/classwork/labs.    (Students answer Buck Byte (Bellwork) questions in notebook every day at the beginning of class.)

5 - 10 questions are randomly selected and students are allowed to use their notebook.  This should be an easy grade if the students have kept up with their work and completed it each day.

For example, a quiz question would read:  "From Monday, 8/27, what was the answer to Buck Bytes #2?"

There will be a notebook quiz this Friday, August 31st.

Cheat Sheet:
Write as much information or diagrams as you want on this sheet of paper (front and back) to use on the test.  The cheat sheet will be turned in with your test.  Make sure your name is written on it!
